Prof. Dr. Frank Schilling
Frank Schilling is a geoscientist who enjoys curiosity-driven research in various fields, whenever possible together with great colleagues. He joined KIT as a professor in 2009 to share his fascination for the geosciences with his students. As a father and grandfather, sustainability in its various dimensions is close to his heart. In recent years, as head of the State Research Centre for Geothermal Energy www.lfzg.de, he has focused on various underground applications to provide society with a more environmentally friendly energy supply. H2 storage (www.samuh2.de), nuclear waste disposal (www.spannend-projekt.de) and hydropower (www.damast-caucasus.de) are some of his other endeavors.
Before becoming head of the Environmental Group at the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), he was a professor at the Free University of Berlin and worked in Experimental Geochemistry @ GFZ, where he investigated the physical properties of geomaterials under deep earth conditions. In 1991 he received his PhD from the University of Tübingen in the field of solid-state sensors. He graduated from the University of Tübingen in 1989. Now he is an old white man - so you can make (bad) jokes about him. During his career, he has had the opportunity to support the community in various functions, for example as Dean of the KIT Department of Civil Engineering, Geo- and Environmental Sciences or as spokesman of the KIT Environmental Centre.
